Will the age of Automation be a Threat to Women?

In this age of automation, where new technologies are emerging, women and men are likely to face job displacement. The McKinsey report that studied ten countries stated that on an average of 107 million, i.e., 20 percent of working women could lose their job. There is no denying of the fact that automation and artificial intelligence are extensively changing the nature of organizations. According to the same report, 1 out of 4 women working today is getting impacted. The real cause of impact is Artificial Intelligence and the automated system. While we embrace technology, it is exasperating to see that about 33 percent more male section have access to the internet than females.

Artificial intelligence and robots are rapidly improving their capacity to manage undertakings that humans have primarily been performing. The automation in today’s age doesn’t merely mean automated mechanical production systems in the automotive industry. Increasingly, Automation and software programming are empowering working environment from customer service chatbots to virtual assistants, to AI-assisted disease diagnosis.

Globally 40 million to 160 millions women may need to transit between occupations by 2030. There can be chances of the significant wage gap due to these transitions if taken into play. However, in many nations, around 70 percent of the female specialists are working in the medicinal services and social help division. Only 25 percent are found in the machinery, manufacturing, and other industries. The Royal Society for the commitment of Arts found that software engineers, programming designers, HR administrators, and executives, were among the best 20 quickest developing occupations. However, Retail clerks and checkout administrators were among the fastest decreasing.

McKinsey noticed that women in the administration sector are in danger of losing positions the most.

The female section of the society to a greater extent are employed in the farming or the agriculture sector in India. This is more likely about 66% of India’s population. Therefore, this section of society is facing higher dangers of employment losses. This could account for 28% of jobs lost by women, compared with 16% of jobs lost by men. McKinsey report also stated that India is on the verge of including an extra 23 million employments for its female section and 91 million for men. However, the danger to occupations will continue firmly/ endure.

Economists have been debating about the effect of technology and automation on jobs for a long time.

It isn’t just the female section of the society who may need to deal with the decreased job rate. It is both women and men that will face an approximate size of potential occupation losses and gains. These losses and gains will, however, vary according to region and industries. Indeed, even with automation, the demand for work and workers can increase as economies develop. For low and medium ability workers, the movement will happen in the employment of lower quality. This means either lower wages or fewer advantages.

What to do?

Advanced technology will, therefore, impact an extensive set of jobs  from office work, to logistics, customer service, and accounting. Consequently, it’s essential to understand what types of roles are vulnerable to automation. Automation can be no doubt disruptive, but this is not the end. Just when some opportunities become extinct, new opportunities will come into play. However, Women can save their place from getting replaced by keeping hold of opportunities as women jobs may be more prone to partial automation than being entirely displaced by automation.

The future is always uncertain but doesn’t have to be dangerous. The good news is we are at the early age of automation. We still have time to respond to the challenges. Therefore, to face these new challenges, the workforce needs to become tech-savvy to save themselves from getting replaced. The latest trend of automation will profit people who have skills that are integral to new innovations. They can thus harvest the majority of the productivity increase in the form of higher wages. For the younger generation to thrive in the age of automation, take this time to find your path. Look up to new and upcoming career paths rather than following the traditional careers. It might be more impactful if you tend to consider a path which might help build your creativity and develop a more mature perspective.
